Sermon notes on the morning of the band bus crash

At my church this morning (Chippewa Valley Bible Church), we devoted the entire worship service to the Chi-Hi bus tragedy. (We have about ten students and five or six adults who were on this marching band trip, and all were at church this morning -- a good place to be in times like these.)

I took some Cliff notes of the sermon that I thought I would share with those who care to read them, if they might provide some comfort.

Life is short:

"Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." -- James 4:13-14

And we will have trouble:

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." -- John 16:33 (NIV)

But that is not the end of the story!

"And now, brothers and sisters, I want you to know what will happen to the Christians who have died so you will not be full of sorrow like people who have no hope." -- 1 Thess 4:13 (NLT)

God will comfort us:

"All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us." -- 2cor1:3-4 (NLT)

This is a chance for believers to let our light shine in our community:

"Be careful how you live among your unbelieving neighbors. Even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will believe and give honor to God when he comes to judge the world." -- 1 Peter 2:12 (NLT)
